Recent thrift store finds

I've hit a few thrift stores this month and want to share just a couple of my finds. I'll post more later. First is this vintage tablecloth. It's too small for my table, but I don't care! I got it for $2 and I think it looks wonderful. It would look better ironed, but I'm not doing that!!

Then there's this bit of happy lovliness. I smile everytime I look at it. Hello gorgeous! What shall you serve me today? I got the set for $6. I think that is a steal!

My band boy!

Stephen has been asked to join the High School band! He was planning to try out next year as a 7th grader, but is so excited for this opportunity to begin a little bit early. Virgil and I are happy for him because he so enjoys band. And I'm looking forward to watching my boy at half-time of the high school football games too. Starting in late August, my Thursday nights will be filled with watching Stephen play football and on Friday nights watching him in band. I CAN'T WAIT!! :)

B is for Biological Clock

Oh the ticking! Can you hear it? [And BTW, if my husband is reading my blog he has already broken a sweat!]

The confounding thing about the biological clock is that in my brain - I do not want to have another baby. I am a perfectly logical (most of the time) gal. I have a 12 year old - kind, wonderful, healthy, smart, only child - son. TWELVE. In 6 years he will be out of high school and heading to college. If I had another baby now, he or she would be starting kindergarten when my boy is graduating. Also, I have a craft room. A baby would make that disappear in a snap. And, I sleep ALL.NIGHT.LONG! And,though I have to deal with stinky dog breath and a farting 12 year old, there are no nasty diapers to really stink up the house. Potty training! Every living thing in this house has that down!

So, why is it that...

everytime I see a sweet little babe I want to cuddle it and kiss on it and sniff its little chubby neck...and slip it into my bag and take it home with me?? Yesterday I even daydreamed about getting woken in the middle of the night and playing with a toothless, grinning bundle of lusciousness. sigh

Virgil, go dab the sweat. It will be out of my system soon. I hope.

Three Virgils and a weekend get-a-way

This weekend Virgil, his parents, Stephen and I stayed in a cabin at Tenkiller State Park near Vian, OK. We were there specifically for an American Bald Eagle and Loon tour.

We did not see any bald eagles.

We did not see any loons.

Er, wait! There were these three loons:

The three Virgils: Virgil Glenn, Virgil Benjamin, and Virgil Stephen

We saw cormarants and Canadian geese:

Pelicans:

Even an armadillo -

{we also saw a opossum and deer, but I didn't get any pictures!)

And the [not so] wildlife that came along for the ride:

That's what vanity will getcha

Today was a followup eye exam. I've been out of contacts for a year and a half because, basically, my poor ol eyes were starving for oxygen being trapped under these plastic (? I guess they're plastic, I dunno) discs.

So today, after wearing glasses for 18 mos and developing a tick that causes me to push on the center of my nose between my eyes every two minutes whether my glasses are on or not, I went to my final fitting for my new "breathable" contacts.

{Sidenote: the receptionist and I discovered we used to play basketball against each other in high school. She's still thin. I don't like her.}

So, I go back with the assistant something or other and she waits for me to put in my new contacts, takes me to an exam room and I climb into an ancient exam chair and she checks my vision. Then she asks me to wait for the DR to come in and make sure the lenses are fitting right and all that.

So, I'm waiting and waiting and I start to wonder how I'm looking without my glasses for a change. I didn't get a good look when I was putting them in. I check out the office, but the only mirror is the one high up on the wall that reflects the letters you have to read during the eye exam. I'm too short to see into that mirror if I stand on the ground.

BUT, vanity has taken hold of me. Do my eyes look bigger with out my glasses - do they look more brown?

I'm a woman. There's one mirror in the room. I will find a way to get a glance of myself.

So I stand. I stand on the foot rest of the exam chair. The ANCIENT exam chair. It tilts forward. Throwing me off balance. Just as the DR opens the exam room door.

That's what vanity will getcha' ...... bruised pride.

I hEaRt Fig Newtons!

I love Fig Newtons. Maybe its because my Papa Wooten always had Fig Newtons when I was a little girl and was always ready to share with me when I visited. (We also took several walks down to the little store on the square for moon pies and RC cola!)

Or maybe I love them because my dear husband told me that wasps lay their eggs in Figs and so that when I eat figs or Fig Newtons that I'm eating wasp eggs. Why would this entice me to love? I dunno, but its a little creepy, right? And it doesn't gross me out at all. And, amazingly, it doesn't gross my hubby out either and he can't even pull hair out of drain without gagging. (tehehe) But, I digress!

The point of this post is that I found these this weekend:

{nope not a 12 pak...I swiped this photo from Amazon}
These are awesome! And eating two of them on a drag-butt morning at work is an awesome pick me up. And they're 100% whole grain...that's got to be better for you than the original! Right?

We had a Wedding!

Two and a half years ago my SIL, Julie, met Tobias. Online. On a dare from my other SIL, Melissa.

Tobias is from Nigeria. He lived in Spain when they "met." Julie visited him in Spain for the first time in November 2007. And about a year ago they became engaged.

On Monday, December 28, 2009, Tobias came to the United States.

And on Friday, January 15, 2010 - Julie and Tobias were married at First Christian Church with a small gathering of family and friends.

I need some more nieces and nephews.

So.Not.Organized.

If there is one thing about myself that I despise, it is my lack of organizational and time management skills. Seriously, I'd give my teeth to have a natural knack for organization. From my spice rack to my closet to my craft room ~ everything is in disarray and some of it is just downright cluttered. Part of the problem is that I want an immediate fix! Wish I could channel some genie powers. I'd be twitching my nose all over the place! But, alas, I'm just the regular garden variety gal without nose twitching abilities - SO.... I've come up with another plan.

Research!

I'm scouring the internet, the library and picking the brains of my friends for organizational tips. I'm hoping if I get the organization down that time management will just fall into place.

So, if you happen to read this blog entry, please leave a comment with an organizational tip for me. Nothing is too menial...trust me....

Puppy Love

Most of the time Rainer doesn't want Patch too close. And he lets him know with a little growl or a scuffle across the living room. But sometimes Rainer lets his guard down, relaxes and cuddles in with his friend. And those moments are PRICELESS!

Our nephew, Sam, turned the B-I-G 4 on December 28, 2009. We celebrated on Jan. 1 with lunch at Red Lobster, cupcakes and presents!
Look at those eyes! You just want to squeeze him don't you? And lucky me...I get to!!!

Happy 2010!!

We rang in the New Year with my Virgil's {famous} steak sandwiches, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Wii Sports, Sparkling Cider and confetti poppers!
[As far as resolutions go, I'm not so great at keeping them when I get specific. However, these two things are on my heart: 1)Serve Others and 2) Be a better me!]

May you each be blessed in the New Year!
