J is for jujubes

**This post is dedicated to my OLD friend, Robbie!** :)

Do you remember jujubes?

Yes?

Well, I don't!! Sure, I've heard of them, but I've never seen them for sale and, until today, I had never even seen the word spelled out. Which leads me to why this post is dedicated to Robbie. Robbie reads my blog and today I received an email from her with this question, "What's your "J"?

Honestly, I was going to skip today. Because my throat is sore. And I'm whiney. And I just couldn't think of a "J" word to write about. (Shhh...don't tell Mrs. Matlock!)

I told Robbie as much, and promptly received an email back with a ton of "j" words listed out. One word was "jujubes." Which I read as JOO JOOBS. So, I replied to Robbie with, "What is jujubes?"

And she called me a baby.

So, my OLD friend, Robbie - here's to you:

Jujubes were first produced some time before 1920. The jujube is an edible berry that grows in the tropics. But the name of the berry has nothing to do with the make-up of the candy, which is more likely related to one of the basic ingredients of both Jujubes and Jujyfruits, ju-ju gum.

Jujyfruits were first made in 1920. Each box contains an assortment of fruit-shaped candy pieces. Both were originally made by the Heide Company which was started by German immigrant, Henry Heide in 1869. Today they are made by the Hershey Company.

Robbie - the box below is probably more familiar to you! :) tehe

SMART ALECK---No, I don’t remember the box especially for 5 cents. Mom and Dad would take us every Saturday to the movie and leave us (you could do that kind of thing in those days). They would have double features and even entertainment (talent shows, hula hoop contest, etc)during intermission. We would get $.50 to spend. I would get a pickle and one of the cheaper candies. I liked sugar babies and junior mints but that usually took all my money.

I REMEMBER eating those at the movies. I DON'T remember them being 5 cents though. Though they could have been. What I remember is sometimes they were very hard and you about broke your teeth on them LOL.

I love those things! We always called them ju ju babies. I think you can still find them online, there are some nostalgia candy companies out there. They sure weren't 5 cents when I bought them lol. Thanks for the info on the Jazz Festival, Cait attends the UNT College of Music so we are familiar with it. But it always coincides with a festival here in town that we have to work! Kathy

I think Jubilee Jujube would be a good name, maybe for my alias...

Sheez, you know I'm wAAAAAAAAAy older than you. Not sure I've ever eaten them either. But the box looks like Hot Tamales, except green. And Hot Tamales are a staple on the motorcycle.

jujubes...I know 'em...never liked 'em much, but they do have a rich heritage, and have been mentioned in countless movies and eaten by countless kids who prefer that sort of thing over chocolate...who could imagine? Super idea for a post...I like learning new things...Peace...and thanks for your visit to my post...

They always remind me of a dots.

Which are right up there with Chuckles as my favorite candy. Ever.

Even in front of chocolate.

Cute post Amy.

I couldn't tell you were whiny at all!

A+

What a cute post! Yes, I remember these, but they weren't my choice at the movies. I think I like the name and the box more than the contents. :-)

Everybody needs a day to be whiney sometimes, usually when I feel that way, I drink a little winey and feel better!

I'm catching up on last week's posts before starting in to the K's. This is a really fun post and yes, I remember jujubes. I'm glad you posted. Hope you're feeling better.

Okay, I'm guessing I'm younger than you, but I do remember Jujubes. As others mentioned, they were often too hard and you'd have to have an iron jaw to even chew the things. Jujyfruits were much better.
