G is for Gas Station

I’ve been curious about this gas station for years now. I don’t know why I never stopped before. Jenny’s Alphabe-Thursday for the letter G was just the motivation I needed!

This old gas station is located just a mile or so from my house. I pass it at least twice every day. I often look at it as I pass, sitting abandoned with only passing cars and trains for company. And I wonder how the scene might have been different in its era. Then I wonder WHEN was its era? Though I have only lived in this town for about 7 years, my grandparents lived here as far back as I can remember. But, I never remember stopping at this gas station.

The pumps are definitely from a bygone time. The coat of rust they wear is a testament to it. The $.49/gal is an indicator too.

Each of the pumps have a glass bulb towards the top. At first I think it is a light, but closer inspection reveals it has something to do with the actual functionality of pumping the gasoline:

After inspecting the pumps, I decided to peek into the window of the store. I’m not sure this is the original store – it certainly isn’t sporting the same rust as the pumps.

A peek inside reveals old metal desks and some awesome old office chairs. And my favorite thing… an old, forgotten, tin box of Sucrets.

I'm surprised that the gas pumps and metal desks were not sold to vintage collectors a long time ago.

Oh that was good! .49 cents...the cheapest I remember is .99 in 1992.
It is amazing it just sits there..the Sucrets box..I remember those. My mom used to use them to hold straight pins when they were empty..

I love old gas stations! And this one is really frozen in time. DH and I have taken alot of road trips and like to photograph old stations, we found a couple in Gonzales that are real beauties. Hopefully we'll find some on our trip for the wedding. Thanks for stopping by! Kathy

That old gas station ought to be in a museum - lock, stock and barrel!

Great G post, those pumps are amazing. I saw a programme on the History Channel recently where one of these was restored and it looked fabulous when it was done.

Wow Amy, that is so cool. I would have been SO tempted to get inside that building! It's crazy that it just sits there, and esp. after all these years. If walls (or pumps) could talk!

It is amazing that this gas station has been sitting abandoned so long! Sadly here ln the city it would have been vandalized so many times.

Fun "G" post Amy!

Your post reminded me of this Southern Daydreamer entry that I read earlier this week.

I just love the old gas stations scattered across Va and NC (at least for me) back-crossroads. Thanks for taking the time to explore and for sharing your great photos.

How cool! I'd love to do a painting of the gas station! Wow, 49 cents. I can remember 55 cents when I first started driving! Yep, it was a long, long time ago ;)
Thanks for visiting!

i havent seen gas pumps like that since i was a kid ... what a cool trip down memory lane. it makes me wonder who owns the station and why it is just sitting there empty and abandoned complete with furniture in the store.
